Training materials

The Challenge Group has produced a number of simple materials to serve as aids to local training for those involved in smoking in pregnancy care pathways. These materials are all free to use and have been produced in collaboration between Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and Public Health England.

The National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT) has a range of online briefings and training. They also provide face to face training and support:

• Smoking cessation: a briefing for midwifery staff

• Standard Treatment Programme for Pregnant Women: a briefing for midwifery staff

• Very Brief Advice on smoking for pregnant women online training

• Secondhand smoke: promoting smokefree homes and cars online training

• E-cigarettes: a guide for healthcare professionals

The same online training is also provided through e-Learning for Healthcare (see below) and by the Royal College of Midwives.

Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare has worked with PHE, NHS Improvement and the NCSCT to develop some new e-learning resources highlighting the importance of supporting women to have a smokefree pregnancy. The resources focus on the delivery of Very Brief Advice (VBA) and Carbon Monoxide monitoring. There are also a series of new educational materials to support local training on these topics, including two short films.

PHE, iPiP and e-LfH have developed a short 10-minute session to support midwives and health visitors in refreshing their skills and ensuring they can undertake a COVID safe intervention. For those who are not yet ready to restart or who think that CO Testing may happen intermittently over the coming months, the session also contains a non-CO testing script which will help midwives and health visitors to engage women in accessing the support that they will need to have a smokefree pregnancy.
